7 Resolutions for Scuba Diving on Catalina

If you’re coming to Catalina as a visitor, chances are, you’re an ocean-lover. In an island locale like Catalina, we depend on and appreciate the ocean deeply. From our oceans, we get fresh seafood, clean oxygen in our air, a place to boat and swim, and a whole underwater world to explore while scuba diving.

Things like pollution and littering, destruction of habitats, climate change, and overfishing can cause problems for the ocean environment. It is so important that we treat our oceans well so that they can continue to provide all of these benefits for the future.

At Catalina Divers Supply, marine conservation is at the heart of all that we do. This year, we invite you to have a memorable experience, diving, snorkeling, or exploring the waters around Catalina Island. We also encourage you to learn how to be a diver that respects our beautiful ocean.

Read on to learn 7 resolutions for scuba diving on Catalina.

1.) Learn some more about MPAs. Marine Protected Areas are regions that are designated for

conservation of marine resources, ecosystems, or cultural heritage. Catalina Island is home to

many MPAs such as the Casino Dive Park, which allows for marine species to recover. MPAs are

often No Take areas, which means that all ocean life must stay put. Some MPAs make

exceptions for the fishing of pelagic finfish or other species. Explore the Casino Dive Park MPA

with the experts at Catalina Divers Supply. In this MPA, you’re surrounded by a gorgeous kelp

forest, and you’ll encounter an ecosystem that holds more than 800 species.

2.) Do some eco-conscious packing. Gear is such an important part of scuba diving. Fueling up

well is essential too. You’ll want to eat healthy foods and stay hydrated for your dive sessions.

When you do pack snacks and water, ensure that you are doing so with the ocean environment in

mind. Aim to stop your use of single-use plastics. Things like plastic shopping bags, straws, water

bottles, and to-go containers can really be harmful to the ocean; each year, a large percentage of

the plastic that is produced ends up in the ocean where it can hurt sea life and pollute the waters.

In the Catalina Divers Supply Dive Shop, we stock eco-conscious gear and accessories, which

helps enable divers to minimize their impact on the environment.

3.) Be part of a solution. Join the efforts to help make the world a better place. You can do a beach

cleanup and pick up litter from the shore any time. But if you’re planning on scuba diving in

Catalina, why not join us for the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup in February of 2025? This is

one of the major dive events in Southern California, and it is the only time that scuba diving is

allowed in Avalon Harbor. The collection of trash and debris at this event is remarkable, and it

makes a difference in our local ocean environment. If you want to join, but you need to rent your

gear for the day, Catalina Divers Supply has got you covered.

4.) Become a better diver. When you work on improving your skills and knowledge as a diver, you

can help to reduce your impact by having better buoyancy. Catalina Divers Supply offers a

number of different scuba classes. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, we can

serve you through our on-site classroom and multiple offerings for different levels of classes.

Some popular classes include open water, advanced diver, and Avelo diver.

5.) Power yourself around town. When you come to Catalina to scuba dive, consider all the ways

you can help to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels. Ride a bike, or walk from your

accommodations to downtown. You can make a little impact by your daily transportation choices

while you’re in this island paradise.

6.) Re-use. At Catalina Divers Supply, we are big on reusing everyday items like masks, snorkels,

wetsuits, and fins. In fact, part of our business is based on the re-use and rental of all kinds of

dive gear. Snorkel and dive gear are both available for rental or purchase at the Casino shop or

at the Green Pleasure Pier in Avalon.

7.) Check the menus. When you’re dining out on Catalina, there are plenty of seafood offerings.

Why not take conservation into consideration when you’re ordering any kind of fish dinner. Aim to

consume sustainable or responsibly caught fish.
